How Silicon Valley Just Might Save America from the Growing Drone Threat

The recent news about Allen Control Systems’ $200 million funding round for its Bullfrog platform, which can shoot down drones in seconds, has sparked hope that Silicon Valley innovation might counter the growing drone threat. This development is more than just a welcome surprise – it’s a symptom of a larger trend that could fundamentally change America’s approach to national security.

The Pentagon’s Drone Dominance Program, which aims to produce 200,000 American-made drones annually, has been widely panned by experts as unrealistic and laughable. China can easily outstrip this goal, making the effort futile. Instead of chasing drone supremacy, the US would be better off focusing on developing effective counter-drone capabilities.

ACS’s Bullfrog platform is a prime example of such a capability – scalable, affordable, and capable of responding to threats in seconds. The company produces 10 units per week and plans to announce major manufacturing expansions in Texas and Alabama, which will enable it to ramp up production to thousands of units monthly. This is staggering, especially considering the US military’s reliance on Patriot and Thaad missiles to counter drones – an unsustainable tactic that costs $4 million per shot.

The introduction of online shopping forums like the Army UAS marketplace and C-UAS marketplace is significant. These platforms allow commanders to “buy and try” vetted vendors’ products, effectively letting the best rise to the top rather than trying to pick winners ahead of time. This shift in procurement policy marks a crucial acknowledgment that the traditional way of doing business is no longer viable.

The trend has far-reaching implications. It signals a willingness by the Pentagon to adapt and adopt Silicon Valley-style innovation in its warfighting capacities. This could be the turning point America needs to regain some of its military mojo – or at least reduce its vulnerability to drone threats. As Cantwell noted, while the DoD acquisition system is notoriously sluggish, recent changes suggest that the administration is starting to adapt.

ACS and other anti-drone startups like Anduril and DroneShield are not yet publicly traded but their shares are available on secondary platforms like Hiive and Forge. Investors should keep a close eye on these companies’ claims, especially given recent talk of a defense tech bubble.

Silicon Valley’s injection of innovation into national security will undoubtedly change the landscape of American defense forever.
