The Distorted View of Reality: How Our Maps Shape Our Understanding of the World

The United Nations’ recent resolution to replace the Mercator map with a more accurate representation of landmasses has sparked debate about the role that cartography plays in shaping our perception of reality. This shift is a step towards correcting a centuries-old problem, but it also raises questions about the impact of inaccurate maps on global politics and economies.

The Mercator map, developed by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was driven by practical considerations – it allowed European sailors to navigate the oceans more effectively. However, as cartography Professor James Cheshire notes, this came at the cost of accuracy: “The distortion is a result of it being impossible to accurately represent the surface of a globe on a two-dimensional chart.” The map’s most glaring error is its portrayal of Africa as roughly equal in size to Greenland – despite the African continent being approximately 14 times larger.

This distortion has real-world consequences. Maps shape how regions are perceived politically and economically, according to Kenyan geographer Kioko Muendo: “Maps are more than just guides for travelers; they implicitly downplay Africa’s vast resources, population, and investment opportunities.” The Mercator map perpetuates a narrative of Western superiority, reinforcing the notion that smaller, wealthier countries near the equator have greater importance. This has significant implications for global development, as it can lead to skewed priorities and resource allocation.

The adoption of the Equal Earth projection is a step towards correcting this problem. Developed by a team of cartographers in 2018, this map presents landmasses more accurately – but at the cost of navigation accuracy. As Cheshire notes, “You can preserve area, or you can preserve shape, or you can preserve distance and direction, but not everything at once perfectly.” This trade-off raises questions about the value of accuracy over usability.

Other attempts to correct the Mercator map’s flaws have been made. The Peters world map, designed by Arno Peters in the 1970s, sacrifices shape accuracy for scale accuracy. While this map fixes the Greenland-Africa size issue, it severely distorts landmass shapes and is useless for navigation. This highlights the tension between accuracy and usability.

The UN’s resolution marks a significant shift towards greater accuracy in global mapping. However, it also raises questions about what this means for our understanding of the world. As we begin to adopt more accurate maps, we must consider the impact on global politics and economies. Will these new maps reshape our perceptions of Africa and other underrepresented regions? Or will they simply become another tool for reinforcing existing power dynamics?

The complexities inherent in mapping solutions demand attention. By acknowledging the limitations and trade-offs between accuracy and usability, we can create a more accurate representation of our world – one that reflects its true geography, politics, and economies.
